The Migraine Day Protocol

Nothing to learn on a day you cannot think. Set it up once on a good day — then, when a bad one comes, just follow the numbers. It won't cure anything. It makes the worst ones more bearable, and that is the whole job.

Before the bad day — five minutes, once

1
The cap lives in the freezer, inside its sealed pouch.

Flat, not folded, so the gel spreads even. The pouch is why it never picks up the freezer smell — no naked caps on the fish drawer.

2
Cold-sensitive? Use the fridge shelf instead.

Freezer-cold is too much for some heads and most ears. Fridge-cold is gentler and still works. If you don't know which you are yet, start with the fridge — you can always go colder.

3
Stage the rest where you'll collapse.

Eye pillow in the fridge or freezer beside the cap. Ear band on the nightstand. Water within reach of the bed. Future-you will not be up for a scavenger hunt.

4
Running two caps? Both in, side by side.

The rotation only works if the second one is already cold. One on, one waiting — that's the whole system.

When it starts — the protocol

1
Go dark, early.

Curtains shut, screens off, phone on silent. Don't wait to see how bad it gets — the earlier the room goes dark, the easier everything after this is.

2
Cap on, halo down over your eyes.

Seat the V of the hem at your nose so it sits properly, then pull the front down until the light is gone. The gentle squeeze is part of it — let it settle rather than fighting it.

3
Ear band on, world off.

Over the cap's edge, covering your ears. It softens sound and holds warmth where the cold shouldn't reach.

4
The hot-feet trick — the old one, because it helps.

If you can manage it: feet into water as hot as you can comfortably stand (or a hot-water bottle at your feet under the covers), while your head stays cold. Sufferers and hydrotherapists have sworn by the hot-feet-cold-head pairing for generations. Try it once; you'll keep it.

5
Be still. Ride it out.

Slow breaths. No clock-watching. The pain doesn't have to vanish for this to be working — you're aiming for "something I can be a person through", not a miracle.

6
At about 20 minutes: swap or rest.

The cold fades around then — every gel cap on earth, ours included. If you run a rotation, swap to the cold cap and put the warm one back in the freezer. If you have one cap, rest it in the pouch for a spell and use the eye pillow in between.

Small print worth knowing

Situation Do this
Pressure feels like too much Some heads can't take squeeze on the worst days. Switch to the eye pillow alone — cold and dark without the hold.
Cold makes yours worse It genuinely does for some. Use the cap microwave-warmed instead (short bursts, test on your wrist), or stop — this is a tool, not a test.
Tension-type days Warm mode often beats cold: microwave in short bursts until gently warm, never hot.
Washing Unzip the sleeve, machine-wash at 30°. The gel core never goes near water — wipe it and back in the pouch.
Between bad days Cap stays in the freezer, in the pouch, ready. The whole point is never having to prepare mid-attack.
The honest line, one more time: this protocol doesn't cure migraine — nothing we could sell you does, and anyone implying otherwise deserves your scepticism. Cold, dark, quiet and stillness are the oldest tools there are (the first great migraine textbook prescribed ice and darkness in 1873). This is those tools, done properly.

This guide is comfort and self-care information, not medical advice — we are a cap company, not your care team. Speak to a pharmacist, GP or neurologist about treatment, especially if your pattern changes, worsens, or is new. Stop using cold or heat if it reliably makes things worse for you.
